  6. This is a very sensitive subject. Self-harm is when you hurt yourself as a way of dealing with very difficult feelings, painful memories or overwhelming situations and experiences. There are many different ways to self harm and some are a lot worse than others. Someone who self harms will often try to hide it. There are some times signs you can look out for. For example, when someone who cuts themselves on purpose they often cover up with long sleeve tops etc even on really hot days. For some people, self-harm is linked to specific experiences and is a way of dealing with something that's either happening at the moment or which happened in the past. For others, the reasons are less clear and can be harder to make sense of. Sometimes you might not know why you hurt yourself. If you don’t understand the reasons for your self-harm, you are not alone and you can still ask for help. Again, MIND have a lot of information. GP's are usually understanding too.   7. There are a lot of things that come under the heading of mental health issues : Depression, panic attacks, anxiety, body dysmorphic disorder, bipolar... just to name a few. As someone who has suffered mental health problems for many years and has been on medication for depression and anxiety since the age of 16 (so many years) and will be on those meds for the rest of my life I am able to talk quite openly about it. For many people though , when first diagnosed they are reluctant to open up about it as there is still a huge stigma attached to mental health. I found out recently that you can self refer to MIND. If you suffer with depression, anxiety or stress then contact your local MIND and request a form. Make sure you put on the form what it is you suffer with.   8. There are quite a few types of eating disorders , some are more well known than others. I have suffered from Anorexia, Bulimia and comfort eating over a span of about 40 yrs. I am glad to say I am now recovered but still struggle with eating out and set meal times. I ran a self help group in Yorkshire for several years to help people as there was very little support from health professionals. Recently I approached a nurse to ask for support to lose weight as I had always been told to keep away from slimming world/weight watchers etc due to my history of eating disorders. In Yorkshire I had support from a specialist dietician and mental health team. This nurse told me to there is no support here and slimming world or weight watchers were my only options. They are not for me so I struggle on and will try and help myself.   13. That's me ! Although I don't smoke, only have the odd glass of alcohol ( at most one per week ) , am overweight, don't eat my 5 a day and don't exercise enough

  19. This is something I have had big issues with over the last 18 months on facebook so please be very careful. Anything like this should always be reported to the host whether it is Facebook, Twitter etc. If it happens in a group then it should be reported to a member of the admin team as they have a bit more power to deal with things.   20. I have permission from Brian to share this with you. Hannah is a member of my community group and suffers from a lot of serious health issues. I was fortunate to meet her when I was in the Lake District when she kindly donated her mobility scooter that she no longer needed to Phil to help him get around. Hannah now has an electric wheelchair. Last night I received this message from Hannah : I’ve just gotten a date in the post for a big surgery, which is on New Year’s Eve. So if any of you would like to be my New Year’s Eve party it would be lovely if you could send me a letter, to help me start 2019. I will be away from home, friends and family. I’m going to reply to as many as I can, as I will be in hospital a while. This address is in the United Kingdom.
